“Why Can’t We Look The Other Way?”
I’ve become a bit of a connoisseur of bizarre music videos. This is good, because there are quite a few of them if you just keep a look out.
I posited an insight in another place at an earlier time, and after watching a number of strange videos, I’m more confident than ever in stating my belief that the euphictional story is the written equivalent of the music video.
The band that inspired my stories for the book is Interpol – Daniel Kessler, Carlos Dengler, Sam Fogarino and Paul Banks. And while Interpol is a very New York band with a heavy Joy Division influence whose songs deal mostly with the myriad dramas between and amongst the sexes, the music video can be sited as the reason my stories of primordial dwarfism, bigoted ex-military men, collaboration with robotic deities, murder in blanked out worlds, and coin operated art galleries work as expressions of the band’s songs.
Compare and contrast with me, if you will. Have your copy of COVER STORIES handy? Don’t have it yet? Well, get one here (all the cool kids are doing it), then read my story about the return of a 2000-year-old rabbi to America. When you’re finished with that, watch this video for “Evil,” which is arguably Interpol’s most famous song.
See what I mean?
I love this video because it’s so full of creepy tensions and inspires such bubbling, conflicting emotions. But the best thing about it is that it has everything and absolutely nothing to do with the song. Brilliant.
(And this coming from a guy who really, really, really hates fucking puppets.)
