10 Literary Songs…

Just as euphiction in Cover Stories is fiction inspired by music, there are plenty of songs inspired by literary works.

After doing lots of intensive research on Wikipedia, I’ve selected ten songs that were inspired by books. Some are obvious, some might even surprise you.

  1. “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by Metallica is based on Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls.
  2. “The Ghost of Tom Joad” by Bruce Springsteen is based on John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath.
  3. “Haunted” by Poe is based on Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves (this one is a particular favorite!)
  4. “Killing an Arab” by The Cure is based on Albert Camus’ The Stranger.
  5. “Lullaby” by Lagwagon is based on Chuck Palahniuk’s Lullaby.
  6. “Never Gonna Stop (The Red Red Kroovy)” by Rob Zombie is based on Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange.
  7. “Scentless Apprentice” by Nirvana is based on Patrick Süskind’s Perfume.
  8. “Sympathy for the Devil” by The Rolling Stones is based on Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita.
  9. “To Tame a Land” by Iron Maiden is based on Frank Herbert’s Dune.
  10. “Who Wrote Holden Caulfield” by Green Day is based on J. D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye.
